Governors' Letterbooks Collection

Governors' Letterbooks

This collection consists of fourteen letterpress copybooks of outgoing correspondence of Governors William Y. Atkinson, Allen D. Candler, Alfred H. Colquitt, John B. Gordon, Henry D. McDaniel, William J. Northen, James M. Smith, and Alexander H. Stephens. These books date from 1872 to 1899.

This collection does not constitute the entire series of Governor's Letterbooks of outgoing correspondence. The letterbooks which were kept on conventional paper are available on microfilm at the Georgia Archives. The letterpress copybooks were scanned for preservation purposes and are made available to researchers here.

These records are from Record Group 001-01-001, Governor, Executive Dept., Governor's Letterbooks.

A note about viewing the Letterpress Copybooks

On some pages, the ink has faded, making the letter almost illegible. This is unfortunate but normal and also appears in the original copybooks. In these cases, the impression from the original letter was not strong enough to make a clear copy.

On other pages, the ink ran when the copy was made. In these cases, the paper was wet too thoroughly in making the impression.

The End Sheet of most books includes a description of the letterpress copying method and directions for using the book.
